Oldham v Heaton Mersey
The U12’s played only their second full game this season away at Oldham. Oldham were playing on the back of a long spell undefeated and were well organised and confident.
The first quarter was all one way traffic with Mersey struggling to get the ball out of defence. The first Oldham goal was a fluke with the ball bouncing off the head of a Mersey defender, three other Oldham goals followed. The quarter was aggressive and at times bad tempered with the penalty area occupied more often than not. In the second quarter Mersey settled down and played better, they did concede another two goals but eventually Mark opened Mersey’s account after several well constructed attacks. Oldham’s defence was tight and gave Mersey little room and their goalkeeper was a very experienced older lad who gave nothing away.
The second half saw Mersey grow in confidence and start to dominate the game. They didn’t concede a goal in the second half and threw all they could at the Oldham defence, Benjamin added two excellent goals after more well constructed attacks but in the end against this defence goals were going to be hard to come by and the game ended with a 6:3 loss.
This was a great game to watch and was another improving performance by Mersey. It is worth mentioning the three new Mersey players who made a significant contribution to the team.
